How-To Brew: French Press
Making smooth black Vietnamese coffee with a French press
What you’ll need:
🔘Daybreak MEDIUM roast coffee (coarse size grind)
🔘French Press
🔘Boiling water
🔘Mixing spoon
🔘Glass cup
🔘Scale (optional)
The goal is achieve a 1:10 ratio of coffee to water.
For our video example, we’ve decided to use 40g of coffee with 400ml of water.
Ideally, you want to use water that’s slightly under boiling. You can measure this with a kettle that has a built in thermometer or just wait a few minutes after your water boils.
First add your ground coffee and then pour your water over your coffee grounds. Use a mixing spoon to agitate the grounds and water. Then place the lid of the French press back onto the base to hold the heat in. Now wait for 4 minutes to allow the coffee to brew.
Again, we're aiming for four minutes. If the coffee's not strong enough, you can let it sit for five or six minutes. If it's too bitter or too strong for you, you can take that tine down to three minutes.
Once your 4 minutes are up, slowly push down the plunger to filter and push down the coffee grounds to the bottom. Be careful not to push too fast or else grounds will come up into your brewed coffee.
When the plunger is all the way down, we're left with smooth black coffee and all the grinds are in the bottom.
At this point you can just taste and adjust. You could adjust the amount of water relative to your coffee to make it less or more strong, the time that the coffee is waiting or your grind size if you find there’s too much sediment in your brewed coffee.
And now we're ready to just pour that into our glass. Enjoy!
